The South East branch of Women in Property recently hosted a virtual “Leading Ladies” Event with guest speaker Kate Davies, CEO of Notting Hill Genesis who are one of the largest housing providers in the country. The event was chaired by Fionnuala Woods, Commercial Property solicitor, at Clarkslegal LLP and they were joined by a range of attendees from across the property industry including solicitors, architects, developers and agents.
Prior to becoming the chief executive of Notting Hill genesis, Kate was the chief executive of Notting Hill housing a role she had held since 2004. she was previously the chief executive of servite houses and director of housing in Brighton and Hove. In addition, Kate is a non-executive director with the national house building council and board advisor to YLD culminating in a career in housing which has lasted for over thirty years. The event started with Kate offering an informative insight on her career journey including the challenges of starting out in the profession, while also juggling having a young family.
There was then time for questions on a range of interesting topics including contingency plans for Notting Hill genesis, in the event of a no deal Brexit and Kate’s thoughts on the changes to the planning regime recently proposed by the government, which will allow vacant shops to be converted into homes without a planning application and allowing homeowners to build extensions "via a fast-track approval process”. These questions then led on a discussion on how we need to rethink our homes/work space in the wake of a the Covid-19 pandemic, the collaborative role housing associations can play with education providers and tips for women networking at property events which are predominantly male; Kate’s tip – always attend in twos!
It was an informative and lively event which was enjoyed by everyone who attended and has had much positive feedback. Many thanks to Kate, for volunteering her time, and the South East branch of Women in Property for organising. The branch hopes to organise another “Leading Ladies” Event in the autumn and we look forward to welcoming you all then.
