What to do when your staff member suffers a bereavement

It is worth thinking about how your organisation would handle an employee’s bereavement as dealing with this well will ensure that the staff member returns to work and productivity as soon as possible.

ACAS has published a Guide ‘Managing Bereavement in the Workplace’ which provides useful advice on how to sensitively manage this issue, including communication between the bereaved and the workplace, time off, and managing the return to work and beyond.

ACAS recommends putting a Bereavement Policy in place and providing training for managers in how to deal with bereaved staff.
