The perils of Christmas parties

22 November 2013 #Employment

A decision of the employment tribunal this week is a timely reminder about employee’s behaviour at Christmas parties.

Last Christmas, Virgin Media organised a festive party at which Tracy Cordiner, their employee, attended.  She had too much to drink (which she later admitted) and allegedly made inappropriate and racist comments about her colleagues as well as allegedly sexually harassing another.  Ms Cordiner was dismissed, following an investigation, for gross misconduct.  This was held by the employment tribunal to be a fair dismissal.

Employees should remember that inappropriate behaviour can result in their dismissal.  It is also a good idea for employers, whilst you do not want to be a kill joy, to have a clear policy about what is and is not acceptable at such events.
