Olympics strike called off

27 July 2012 #Employment

Further to our blog on the government’s plans to block strike action by public sector workers on the eve of the Olympics, the strike has now been called off. The strike could have caused serious disruption at Heathrow and other airports as thousands of spectators arrive for the Olympic Games.

The PCS union has apparently said that the government had agreed to create hundreds of new jobs, but this has been denied by the Home Office. Whilst the reason for the union’s change of plan is unclear, this news will undoubtedly be a huge relief for the government and Olympic organisers alike. It remains to be seen whether the union will threaten further industrial action in the future.
