Greek triple jumper, Voula Papachristou, has been expelled by the Greek Olympic Committee from competing in London 2012 after tweeting a racist joke.
Voula`s tweet: "With so many Africans in Greece, at least the West Nile mosquitoes will eat home made food!" has sparked outrage and huge criticism across the social media networks.
Despite having issued a lengthy apology the Greek Olympic Committee expelled Voula from their team saying her statements had been "contrary to the values and ideas of the Olympic movement. We are not just here to get medals but to promote the Olympic ideals, to show our character".
Employers and organisations are becoming increasingly conscious of the power of social media. Although arguments will continue surrounding freedom of speech and human rights issues for individuals, employers are aware how important it is to have a clear social media policy in place covering both business and private use.
Employmentbuddy has a free social media policy available to all members.
