Furlough: Report suggests continued working and lack of equality

The Guardian has reported that, according to a recent report, two thirds of workers continued to work whilst they were furloughed, contrary to the rules of the scheme. Of these, 22% of men and 17% of women said that they were formally asked to continue working by their employer.

The article also reports that men were more likely to continue to work than women and that significantly more women were furloughed than men. Further, it suggests that around 75% of men had their furlough pay topped up compared to less than 65% of women.

These are disturbing findings suggesting not only an abuse of the scheme but also the possibility of discriminatory practices in the way it has been applied.
