Couples to share maternity leave

Worryingly the announcement today by Nick Clegg regarding couples sharing maternity leave, where fathers can take some of the mother`s unused leave, goes even further than previously expected, by suggesting that the time off could be taken in shorter  "blocks" of time rather than all at the same time or concurrently rather than consecutively. 

Businesses already struggling with employees taking off up to 12 months maternity leave, will be horrified to think that they will have to provide cover for blocks of time off, rather than one period of maternity leave.  The cost and practicalities of finding cover for this type of absence is likely to be a significant worry for many organisations.   The notice requirements for taking time off, the rights of returning mothers and fathers  and the scope of the right to take blocks of time off are going to be of huge importance to all businesses. 

This looks set to complicate the already onerous maternity laws of which companies have to get a grip!
