BA employee alleges he was sacked for taking time out for union activities

07 May 2010 #Employment

Duncan Holley, a secretary of a branch of Unite, alleges that he was summarily dismissed by BA because he took time off work before Christmas to carry out union duties.

Trade union representatives have a legal right to reasonable paid time off to carry out trade union duties and activities, to undergo training, and to accompany a worker to a grievance or disciplinary hearing. Union members also have a right to reasonable unpaid time off when taking part in trade union activities.

As we all know, Unite and BA have been locked in a dispute over pay and working conditions for some time and in March cabin crew went on strike.

BA have made no comment about the reasons for Mr Holley`s dismissal, so we will have to watch this space!
