The public is being invited by the government to nominate laws they want to abolish by proposing ways to get rid of pointless regulation and red tape on the Your Freedom website. Another exercise on the site asks public sector workers where the cuts should come.
Was this a good idea?
So many people went on the website yesterday, it crashed. Demands included abolishing the Human Rights Act and more bizarrely, ending a ban on marrying horses!
Mr Clegg promised ‘raucous, unscripted debates` which will ‘throw up the best ideas` to form part of the Freedom Bill to be published in the autumn. Well he has certainly achieved the former. Whether any good comes of the exercise will depend what suggestions if any the government chooses to act upon.
