Age Discrimination Claims Increase

27 April 2011 #Employment

Claims brought for age discrimination rose by 164% to 2,900 in the three months to December 2010, compared to 1,100 in the same period in 2009.

The rise is down to older workers believing they had been disproportionately affected by job cuts, EMV said.

EMV expect the removal of the default retirement age to add to this influx of claims by making it harder for employers to retire older staff. Since April 6 2011, a new law has outlawed forced retirement at 65.

Figures show workers aged 50 to 64 have a lower employment rate than people between 25 and 49.
