Public Sector Equality Duty
12 May 2011
A new ‘Quick Start` guide on the Public Sector Equality Duty has been published by the Government Equalities Office and can be found at http://www.equalities.gov.uk/.
The new Public Sector Equality Duty, which came into force on 5 April 2011, requires public bodies to consider the impact of their policies and methods of delivering services on those who possess certain protected characteristics.
There are three aims which public bodies must have due regard to:
- The need to eliminate unlawful discrimination,
- Advance equality of opportunity, and
- Foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it.
