Is it better to embrace football fever in the workplace or not?

12 May 2010 #Employment

The world cup is fast approaching and with it comes the inevitable sickies. So how should employers deal with it?

The CIPD has made a number of suggestions including flexible working hours, shift swaps, unpaid leave, and providing a special screen to show matches on work premises. Encouraging staff to use their annual leave is also an option. You may not welcome the distraction of a TV screen in the workplace, but it may be better to embrace the football fever and get the best out of your workers by being more flexible and allowing them to watch matches where possible.

We recommend issuing a notice to staff setting the boundaries of how the company is willing to work with employees during the world cup. At the same time it is advisable to issue a warning that unauthorised absence, strategic sickies and general poor performance or behaviour will be dealt with under the dsiciplinary procedure.

Hopefully this will help avoid problems and encourage good times all round during the world cup!
