For years there have been complaints about Health and Safety going mad. We have heard reports of children having to wear goggles to play conkers, garden gnomes being "moved on" by over enthusiastic councils.
Many people will therefore welcome the Prime Minister`s announcement that Lord Young is to carry out a review of health and safety laws. The intention is to reintroduce an element of common sense and not overwhelm businesses with red tape.
All this sounds very sensible, but we mustn`t lose sight of the fact that the law provides important protection for workers, especially in high risk industries. On average someone is killed at work every working day, and very often this is because health and saftey regulations have not been followed.
A balance therefore needs to be struck between the essential health and safety regulations and the "red tape". Lord Young has commented that the system has to be "proportionate and not bureaucratic. It will be intereetsing to see how he tackles this when he reports his findings in the summer - just before the conker season!
Employmentbuddy has a range of health and safety documents including a Health and Safety policy and guidance notes.
